BinBin, a young cogent who can harness the mysterious powers of the kuronoki trees, must find a way to control her abilities and find out the secrets of the planet she lives on in order to save it from a coming catastrophe.
The Design
The design features the main character BinBin along with her sidekick Bird, against the looming backdrop of the coming eclipse and the kuronoki trees of Jarruk-Gai.
Longeye and the Wolf
by Baden M. Chant
The Book
A collection of short stories following the adventures of a medieval soothsayer, his apprentice, and a strange mute girl with an uncanny ability to perhaps see the future.
The Design
The design draws on various imagery from the title story Longeye and the Wolf, of castles and sieges, omens of death, a raven feathered cape and a prediction that will eventuate in three days. Meanwhile use of a blackletter font was the obvious choice in typography.
a few right thinking men
by Sulari Gentill
The Book
1930s, Rowland Sinclair and his group of friends solve crime against the backdrop of Sydney during the Great Depression.
The Pitch
This design uses bold shapes, bright colours and clean imagery inspired from 1930s travel posters. The use of shadows allude to the hidden mysteries within, while its vibrant colour scheme set the tone of the book.
She Be Damned
by M. J. Tjia
The Book
Victorian London, a courtesan slash professional detective, a series of murders to solve.
The Pitch
This concept uses a profile silhouette, alluding to the hand-painted miniature silhouettes of the Victorian era while also drawing similarities with the notable Sherlock Holmes image. Other elements such as images of London integrated into the silhouette and background, and the choice of font also help in identifying the setting of the book. The blood splatters indicate that this is a crime novel, and the bright colours appeal to modern readers.
Crossing the lines
by Sulari Gentill
The Book
A thriller mystery, two writers, both the protagonist of the other's fictional stories, the blurring of reality.
The Pitch
Ink and Smoke
The red and black ink represent the two writers intertwining together as their worlds collide. It is also reminiscent of smoke, that which obscures the truth.
The Hand
The hand is the tool of creation, from which an author spins their story. Here, the inks are spilling out of control. Is the hand trying to contain it, or is it reaching out in search of something beyond?
Typography
The idea of ‘crossing the lines’ is reflected subtly in the way the type moves from its horizontal plane to a diagonal plane, and the way it interweaves with the ink/smoke.
