Envisaged as a series of three books, the 1.5G series explores the migrant experience from the point of view of the sometimes overlooked generation known as the 1.5 generation. Not quite first generation, and not quite second generation, the 1.5 are the kids that came with their parents from their motherland into a new unknown world full of excitement and trepidation, often having to navigate new experiences without the help and knowledge of their parents, family or friends.
Project
Illustrated Children's book
An oldie but a goodie. Although this project was done a long time ago and was part of my major project when I was still a student in design school, it holds a special place in my heart. Based on my own experiences as a member of the 1.5 Gen, I wanted to craft a story that illustrated the unique experiences of the 'in-between generation' that is not often portrayed. Using the analogy of birds, the book follows the journey of a migrant child and their family who are forced out of their natural habitat, flying to a foreign land to seek a better living.
To find the right style of illustration I experimented with different mixed media forms, until I realised that combining my love of paper craft with digital montages and photography was a winning combination.
Between Worlds is the first and only completed book in a series of a never quite realised trilogy.
