Now a part of Western Sydney University's Parramatta campus, the Female Orphan School (FOS) was first established in 1813 and is the oldest three-storey building in Australia. To mark its 200 years, a set of panels were commissioned detailing how it has reflected and shaped Australia's social history over the centuries.
Project
Panels
A set of 5 large panels were created, each correlating to a time period in the Female Orphan School's history from a school for orphans to a psychiatric hospital to now being host to the Whitlam Institute. The backgrounds on the designs were derived from photographs of the textured walls and fading wallpapers found around the building, which in turn informed the colour palette for the panels.
The panels are on permanent display at the Female Orphan School.
